South Pacific Subtropical Anticyclone: Intensity and Localization

M. G. Vershovskii and K. V. Kondratovich

Long-term variations of a latitudinal position of atmospheric action centers (AAC) of the Southern Hemisphere and their intensities are studied. A relationship between long-term changes in intensity and latitudinal localization both of South Pacific anticyclone and two other subtropical AAC of the Southern Hemisphere is established. Physical interpretation of the relationship revealed is proposed. It is based on the analysis of tendency equation on the vertical component of vorticity and interrelation between AAC characteristics and variations of the rate of the Earth’s rotation. Periods of increased and decreased variations of intensity and latitudinal AAC position are specified.
