Influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation on Temperature and Salinity of Intermediate and Deep Waters in the Subpolar North Atlantic

A. A. Sarafanov

It is found that long-term changes in thermohaline characteristics of intermediate and deep waters at the northern periphery of the Atlantic are close to in-phase changes and are consistent with long-term changes in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. A general mechanism is proposed that explains the influence of the low-frequency component of the NAO on temperature and salinity of intermediate and deep waters of the subpolar North Atlantic.
