Atmospheric Circulation at the Low Latitudes in the Periods of the Warm and Cold Phases of the ENSO Phenomenon

E. K. Semenov, E. V. Sokolikhina, and N. N. Sokolikhina

The scenarios of the development of large-scale anomalies of the atmospheric circulation in the period of the warm and cold phases of the ENSO Phenomenon are generalized on the basis of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data for 1958–1998. The composite fields of the most informative characteristics of the atmospheric circulation in the lower and upper troposphere of the tropics and the anomalies of the sea surface temperature are obtained for the first time separately for the El NIno and La Nina events. We examine the synoptic mechanism of the formation of these phenomena, and show the leading of tropical cyclogenesis in the initiation evolution of the westerly wind anomalies in the near-equatorial latitudes of the Pacific Ocean.
