ASSESSMENT OF THE SIMULATION OF SEA SURFACE FLUXES BY AN OPERATIONAL MEDIUM-RANGE FORECAST SYSTEM OF THE HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL CENTER OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Yu. D. Resnyanskii, A. A. Zelenko, E. S. Nesterov, and I. A. Rozinkina

Sea surface heat, mass, and momentum fluxes are assessed. They are obtained in the operational mode from the output of the medium-range hydrodynamical forecast system of the Hydrometeorological Center of the Russian Federation (RF HMC MRF). Information about fluxes is necessary to monitor energy exchange in the ocean—atmosphere system in order to specify the atmospheric forcing in simulations with ocean general circulation models and to create ocean forecast systems. To assess the quality of operational information, time-mean (2003) global and zonal averages, geographical distributions of monthly means, and temporal variability of integral characteristics from the RF HMC MRF are compared with the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. Local structures in specific synoptic situations are also compared.
