WIND WAVES AND SWELL IN THE NORTH PACIFIC

A. M. Polyakova and S. S. Sugak

On the basis of ship observations for 1968—1979, the regime wave characteristics are calculated for the northern part of the Pacific (north of the 20º parallel). Long-term average monthly and seasonal (cold and warm seasons) maps of wave height frequencies are presented for four gradations: 0—3.5 m, 4 m or more, 6 m or more, and 8 m or more. High waves and hazardous hydrological events in the warm season occur rarely. Their frequency in most of the region does not exceed 1%. For this reason, the warm-season maps are given for two gradations, 0—3.5 m and 4 m or more. Two zones of strong swell are found in the northern part of the Pacific: in the west and in the east.
