CENTERS OF ACTION OF THE TROPICAL ATMOSPHERE AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON SUMMER PRECIPITATION OF THE INDIAN MONSOON

E. K. Semenov, E. V. Sokolikhina, and N. N. Sokolikhina

For the first time in a 50-year period based on the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data calculations were made of the circulation of the wind velocity vector over contours of major centers of action of the tropical atmosphere most significant for the formation of the regime of monsoon rains over the Hindustan Peninsula, and their optimal boundaries in the lower and upper troposphere were estimated. It is shown that the wind velocity circulation over calculated contours correctly reflects the basic properties of baric circulation formations and can be used as an integral indicator of the state of the entire circulation system of the southwest monsoon. Most significant statistical relations between monsoon precipitation and wind velocity circulation in baric centers are obtained for the monsoon and Southwest Asian depressions, Mascarene subtropical and upper-air Tibetan anticyclones.
