THE GENERATION OF AVAILABLE POTENTIAL ENERGY BY LARGE-SCALE CONDENSATION IN MIDDLE-LATITUDE CYCLONES

N. A. Kalinin and A. L. Vetrov

The work presents the study results of the maximum possible generation of available potential energy by large-scale condensation in cyclones observed over Eurasia in 1986—1991 calculated from standard temperature-wind soundings of the atmosphere. It is shown that the maximum possible generation of available potential energy by large-scale condensation is comparable with that of kinetic energy. This means that baroclinic waves can be maintained by internal diabatic processes of the waves, rather than by the energy of the average flow alone.
