SATELLITE RADAR OBSERVATION OF DANGEROUS CATABATIC WINDS NEAR THE CRIMEAN COAST ON 26 MAY 1999

M. V. Bukharov and T. Kh. Geokhlanyan

Conditions of generation of strong catabatic winds and specific character of the spatial variability of surface wind speed near the Crimean coast are investigated. According to satellite SLR, this area is characterized by a regular recurrence of the regions where the maximum wind speeds reach 20—35 m/s. Possible causes of the increase in maximum surface wind near Cape Sarych and the town of Alushta are considered. It is found that the regions of dangerous catabatic winds are practically absent on the picture of the RM-08 microwave radiometer.
