COHERENT STRUCTURES IN THE BOUNDARY LAYER OF THE ATMOSPHERE

V. N. Ivanov and N. L. Byzova

This paper is written in memory of great and productive collaboration with Professor and Doctor of Physics and Mathematics N. L. Byzova. The paper presents collective and individual results obtained at the Institute of Experimental Meteorology (NPO Taifun) from a study of coherent structures (CS) in the atmospheric boundary layer. The feedback of CS and small-scale turbulence, which is mainly responsible for the first modes maintenance in a turbulent boundary layer, is investigated. The dynamics of coherent structures is demonstrated through some examples of sequential changes of their configurations with different rotation axes. The interaction of coherent structures with small-scale turbulence is considered, and coefficients of correlation of low-frequency components of vertical velocity with turbulent energy dissipation and a structural temperature parameter are determined. The influence of coherent structures under convection on the features of atmospheric diffusion which are associated with the asymmetry of updrafts and downdrafts is examined.
