CALCULATIONS OF DENSITY CURRENTS IN THE MOZHAISK RESERVOIR

V. V. Puklakov and K. K. Edelshtein

Prognostic calculations of three types of gravity currents in the Mozhaisk Reservoir were performed using a reliably verified numerical model of water and thermal regimes of a valley-type reservoir. The initial state of its hydrological structure was taken on the basis of a complex survey carried out in the third ten-day period of February 2000. It is shown that, along with the discharge current, a bottom current and an oppositely directed compensation current play an important role in the internal water exchange in cross sections dividing the reservoir into four regions. By velocity and water discharge they are commensurable with the discharge current not only in average-water years, but also in hydrometeorological conditions corresponding to high-water years (~5% probability) and low-water years (~90%), which should be taken into account when predicting a water chemical composition in similar long-period storage reservoirs.
