FUNCTION OF DISTRIBUTION OF WIND VECTOR MODULUS AND DIRECTION

A probabilistic model of a wind vector is proposed. The formulas of joint and marginal distribution densities of wind vector modulus (wind speed modulus) and wind vector direction (wind vector phase) are presented. The formulas are derived on the assumption that the wind vector components U and V are of normal two-dimensional distribution. Numerical experiments that used time series of surface wind observations showed that the model proposed satisfies field data only if empirical distributions of the random values Ui and Vi fit the normal distribution.
