INVESTIGATION OF RIVER WATER PROPAGATION IN THE NORTHWESTERN BLACK SEA IN A SPRING HYDROLOGICAL SEASON

E. A. Agafonov, A. S. Kukushkin, and Yu. A. Prokhorenko

Hydrooptical characteristics are first used to study river water transformation. The results are given of simultaneous observations of hydrooptical and hydrological characteristics in the surface layer of the northwestern Black Sea in the spring hydrological seasons of 1978—1995. Transformed river waters are found to be transported southward by a longshore current and in a convergence zone located along the continental slope. Typical features of the interaction between river and sea waters in the transformation zone are determined from hydrooptical measurements by towed instruments.
