V. V. Asmus, the scientific adviser of Research Center for Space Hydrometeorology (RCSH) Planeta, member of the Roshydromet board, Doctor of Science (Physics and Mathematics), professor, laureate of the prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation and Government of Moscow, academician of the Tsiolkovsky Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, was born in Moscow on December 9, 1952. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Electronic Machine Building (Faculty of Applied Mathematics) in 1976 and completed the postgraduate course in the Computing Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1982. Since 1976, V. V. Asmus has worked in RCSH Planeta; from 1997 to 2022, he has been its director. He is a specialist in the area of mathematical modeling, computational mathematics, and information systems. He takes an active part in the development and implementation of state programs on the creation of Earth observation satellites. V. V. Asmus is the research supervisor and coordinator of extensive cooperation works on the creation of satellite information systems solving strategic problems in the interests of the national economy and defense. The largest geographically distributed automated system for the reception, processing, archiving, and dissemination of satellite data in Russia and one of the largest in the world was developed and put into operation under his leadership.

V. V. Asmus made significant contribution to the development of technologies of remote sensing of the atmosphere, land, cryosphere, and the World Ocean. The software systems for the satellite data processing worked out by him have been used in Russia and abroad. A number of major space monitoring projects (including the international ones) have been realized under his guidance.

V. V. Asmus is the author of more than 150 scientific papers (including monographs and patents) which were published in Russian and foreign journals. He is a member of organizing and program committees of international and Russian conferences as well as of a number of scientific and technical periodicals.

He is a member of national commissions on flight tests of space complexes and launch vehicles used for socioeconomic and defense purposes, a member of the Interdepartmental Expert Commission on Space, a vice-chairman of the councils of chief designers of Meteor, Elektro, and Arktika space complexes, a member of the Space Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Roshydromet and Roskosmos research and development councils, a chairman of the Scientific Board of RCSH Planeta, etc. He represents Russia in some international organizations (WMO, CEOS, CGMS, GEOSS, and EUMETSAT) as an expert in space technologies.

V. V. Asmus was awarded the state (Order of Friendship, Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" of the 2nd class, Medal "In Commemoration of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow", Russian Federation Presidential Certificate of Honour) and departmental (Roshydromet, Roscosmos, Ministry of Natural Resources, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Defense of Russia, EMERCOM, etc.) decorations, the WMO and ICSU prizes. He was awarded the titles “Honored Developer of Space Equipment”, “Honored Tester of Space Equipment”, “Veteran of Russian Cosmonautics”, “Honorary Geodesist”, “Honorary Worker of Hydrometeorological Service of Russia”, “Veteran of Hydrometeorological Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”, “The Best Leader of Russia”, etc.
